Montsu, Inc. was established by the family of Kalpana Chawla after the loss of Space Shuttle Columbia in February 2003. Kalpana flew twice as crewmember aboard Columbia, on missions STS-87 and STS-107.

The objectives of Montsu, Inc. are:

  1. Fund the university education of promising but disadvantaged young people.
     
  2. Promotion of environmental causes.
Recipients of educational sponsorship are selected based on their aptitude for and resources available to pursue higher education; environmental causes are selected for support based on their urgency and probability of success.
