Kalpana had a strong attraction to nature. She was entranced by wildlife — particularly birds — and the environment and spent considerable time, effort and resources supporting those interests. Kalpana was a member of several wildlife organizations, including the Audubon Society, Nature Conservancy, and American Birding Association among others. She was an avid reader of publications such as National Geographic Adventure Magazine. Kalpana often made trips to view birds such as roseate spoonbills in High Island, Texas, whooping cranes in Padre Island, Texas, hummingbirds in Rockport, Texas and sandhill cranes along the Platte River in Nebraska.

Montsu, Inc. works to further Kalpana's guardianship efforts through direct and indirect funding of environmental causes. Direct funding is used to acquire and/or protect natural resources; indirect funding takes the form of grants and/or bequests to established nature preservation organizations with a history of success.

Since the loss of Columbia on 1 February 2003, the following resources have been made available for environmental causes:

1. Kalpana Chawla $300,000 bequest to National Audubon Society.
